Haakarimata is outstanding culturally and ecologically, and is cherished by many. However, the forest and wildlife are being devastated by pests and many taonga species have disappeared. The communities around Haakarimata have a great opportunity to restore the mauri of the range and turn this damage around. With intensive control of possums, rats and stoats it is possible to restore the forest and re-introduce kiwi, kokako and tieke to Hakarimata.
Imagine this happening within your lifetime!
Making this vision a reality will require partnerships at many levels and crucial management decisions to be made. Re-establishing mana whakahaere over Hakarimata is vital, along with a shared vision. Doing nothing is unacceptable because Hakarimata is a special place and deserves special care.
We want to know what you think about this idea and how you might want to be involved.
